Where does time go? In having a conversation with a friend recently, I wondered aloud: is time ever “lost”? If we have “lost time,” can we have “reclaimed time”? Time may be a known entity in that we have all agreed on the rate at which a clock ticks, but the perception of time is relative. That’s why days can feel like they last forever, and years can pass in the blink of an eye. Sometimes progress feels like it’s dribbling down the rocks of time, in my mind, over months of percolating and metabolizing ideas, information, and materials. Other times, I feel progress like a waterfall drenching me out of nowhere. So it was when I took a day recently to sit with myself, my project, and nothing else… I read a book about paper mache arts that has been sitting on my shelf, and I had to admit something to myself: I had been holding on to an idea I had originally about sculpting with paper pulp, but the truth is that my logic and methods have moved on from the original reasons for doing this. At this point, there is actually no reason not to speed up the process with more traditional forms of paper mache (strips and larger pieces of torn paper). Do you ever realize you just have to let go of something, and then everything else clicks into place?
